This week Microsoft effectively purchased the intellectual property behind Novell. Boy, this was a long time in coming and represents kind of a strange page in history. Microsoft initially wanted to buy Novell in the early 90s when Microsoft split with Ray Norda, who ran Novell at the time – and did not believe regulatory approval was possible. He nixed the deal, but had those two companies merged, a lot of things would be different. For one, Eric Schmidt wouldn’t be running Google today and I doubt Linux would have gone as far.

Last Wednesday was The Day. IE9 had me convinced that it was time to finally leave Vista behind and move to Windows 7, ignoring the iron rule that you should never change a running (Windows) system. I got what I deserved: A failed Windows 7 upgrade that destroyed my Vista installation, a screwed up hard drive with new partitions and useless support from Microsoft. Having spent more than 40 hours to restore my PC, once again, I am ready to leave my wimpy self behind. It is time to switch to Linux.

MessageLabs has released a new issue of its monthly intelligence report, which reveals interesting statistics of spam originating from client computers that are infected by botnets. Not surprisingly, most spam comes from Windows users, but Linux systems are five times more likely to be sending spam than Windows. And: There is virtually no spam that is sent from Apple Mac computers.
