Mozilla just posted Firefox 4 RC1 for public download and Microsoft confirmed previous speculation that IE9 would launch on March 14. The next generation browser from both developers are ready to land.

Google announced Chrome 10 with $14,837 worth of security fixes and numerous feature additions such as GPU acceleration, background web apps, sandboxed Flash as well as a faster JavaScript engine.  There is also a new tab feature for the developer version of the browser. In separate news, Google also announced a faster V8 video encoder, instant previews for Android as well as iOS and released a Chrome OS update that rendered Cr-48 Chromebooks useless for many users last weekend.

When was the last time you updated your graphics driver? If you don’t know the answer right away, there is a good chance that you aren’t keeping pace with technology and you will have to adjust your user behavior to keep your browser running smoothly and get the most out of your computer in future web applications. Intel will also have to adapt a much more competitive graphics driver strategy.

The final patches for Beta 12 have passed QA and have been put into a first RC1 build, which is likely to be the final version of Firefox 4 as well. Mozilla also announced its own HTML5 showcase and the developer release of the web apps project, which is likely to result in web apps stores for Firefox.

Can Firefox 4 RC ship yet? More or less, says Mozilla and tells us that only one bug, for which the company already has a “patch”, needs to be fixed.

Mozilla released Firefox 3.6.14 as well as 3.5.17 in anticipation of a round of nasty hack attacks. Firefox 4 is “almost” ready to ship.

We have to admit that we completely missed the release of a preview build of Opera 11.50, which will apparently introduce hardware acceleration, and only found this bit because of our eagle-eyed readers (thanks for those continued emails!) It seems to be a very, very early build that simply introduces the hardware acceleration concept and still has a long way to go before we will see a final release.

Has Mozilla gambled Firefox’ future away? Browser market share data released today indicate that Firefox may have suffered a big blow against its market share, while Chrome and especially IE8 were able to gain. Both Net Applications and StatCounter now state that Chrome has reached a milestone and now has more than 50% of the market share of Firefox.

It’s not just Google that is thinking about ways to get rid of the browser URL bar to free up space for web content. Mozilla has now posted first thoughts that there should be a possibility to remove the URL bar from the browser interface.
