Mozilla has changed the release date of Firefox 4 Beta 2 to July 29, which is one week behind schedule. The release of Beta 3 is still set for August 6.

Mozilla missed the release date of Firefox 4 Beta 2, but is expected to publish the official download early next week. The new beta will offer a few new features, including AppTabs, which will enable sticky tabs that cannot be accidentally closed. Further out, Mozilla has posted a first version of a pre-release of Beta 3 with Tab Candy, Mozilla’s idea how to organize and group open tabs.

Google said that it is planning on releasing a new stable version of Chrome every six weeks, which is about twice as fast as the release pace today. The goal is to make new features available when they are done and to make Chrome releases more predictable. Has anyone complained that there were too few new Chrome releases?

Mozilla appears to be on track to deliver the second beta of Firefox 4.0 by the end of this week. Beta 2 will be focusing mostly on bugfixes and is showing about 33% less crashes than the first beta. Five more betas are planned to follow until the beginning of October. For those who don’t trust beta versions, Mozilla released a security update for the stable version of Firefox: Version 3.6.7 plugs security holes just in time for Blackhat.

Mozilla has reached an important Milestone as its new JavaScript engine “JaegerMonkey” is now faster than the current “TraceMonkey” in a key benchmark. Mozilla wants JaegerMonkey to be faster than the competition and launch on September 1, which means that JaegerMonkey will make it into Firefox 4.0.

Lean browsers are In, at least as far as the user interface is concerned. Mozilla says its Firefox 4 is prettier than 3.x. Microsoft is expected to show a drastically different IE9 next month. Google plows ahead and strips Chrome of everything that is not absolutely needed and raises the question if the streamlining trend has gone too far. Chrome 6 is just about to enter the beta stage and here is what you can expect Chrome 6 to look like.

Following this week’s release of the first beta of Firefox 4.0, Mozilla isn’t wasting any time and has already scheduled the second public beta for the end of the month. Google’s upcoming Chrome 6 browser is maturing and is close to be released to the beta channel.
