Just in time to set the stage for Intel’s Developer Forum, which will open its doors next week and will bring new information about its upcoming Atom processors, ARM has announced its next-generation Cortex processor design, which will run at up to 2.5 GHz with eight or more cores, but will be limited to 1.5 GHz and two cores in smartphone configurations.

Following Qualcomm, Samsung is also close to be launching a new smartphone processor with two cores. Based on ARM architecture, the new processor promises five times the graphics performance of current chips and enable 1080p video recording and playback.

Microsoft finally starting to get it when it comes to portable and mobile devices? For the first time in a long time, there are reasons to be encouraged. First, there was the recent management shakeup inside Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices division, which covers everything from its successful Xbox 360 console to its, ahem, less successful Zune media players and Windows Mobile smartphone operating system. Voluntarily or not (depends who you ask), division President Robbie Bach and Chief Technology Officer J Allard have left the division.
