The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) today published an Apple patent that was filed more than a year ago, in January of 2010, but hints to Apple’s possible approach to create a 3D display, especially for its iPad tablet. The idea: Stack multiple displays on top of each other.

It is scary to watch Sony and technology standards. They love them, but often pick losers or buy a win at a horrid cost. Memory Stick was a loser, Blu-ray was a pyrrhic victory over HD-DVD that cost them the game console business and contributed to their huge losses over the years. Currently LG and Sony are having a bit of a tiff: LG has completed a study showcasing that the passive 3D technology that is used in theaters is more attractive than the active technology most TV makers are now selling. Sony is disputing these results, arguing that only 1 in 6 TVs sold is passive 3D TV.

One of the great ironies of last decade was that Sony was the model that Steve Jobs used to rebuild Apple. By the end of the decade, Apple has been the most successful company in any segment and Sony has been struggling for relevance. What is really strange is that Sony actually has a number of great products but the company often seems to be at war with itself and can’t seem to market its way out of a wet paper bag.

There is a sure way to extinguish that last light that keeps current 3D TVs on life support. Keep content scarce to support nose-bleed prices and keep movies out of reach for average consumers. If you want to see Avatar in 3D at home today, you will need to shell out at least $300 and possibly as much as $400.

3D has a tough time these days and there seem too many hurdles that need to be cleared before consumers will bite. If it’s the glasses you are concerned about you could be picking up a pair of 3D Gascans from Oakley that look more like sunglasses than the latest ridiculous version of Sony/Panasonic/Vizio glasses that come with your 3D TV. However, they may not work with your TV.
