Browser Shootout: Speed Demons Compared

JavaScript Performance

Not surprisingly, Google dominates the V8 benchmark with its most recent beta version, but also comes in first in SunSpider and Celtic Kane. Compared to IE8, Chrome 5 is almost 47 times faster in V8 and about 14 times faster in SunSpider. If we consider stable browsers only, Chrome 4 wins V8 as well as Celtic Kane, while Opera wins the SunSpider contest with a performance level that is close to what Chrome 5 offers.

What stands out is clearly the performance of the most recent Chrome 5 release. In V8, it is 78% ahead of its nearest competitor, Opera 10.53, and is nearly seven times faster than the most recent IE9 platform preview. In Celtic Kane, it is twice as fast as its closest rival IE9 PP2 and in SunSpider it continues to show how much room for performance improvements is left. IE shows Microsoft’s progress best in SunSpider, where IE9 PP2 beats Firefox and is close to the performance level of Safari 4.04. Compared to IE8, IE9 PP2 delivers 7.4 times performance in V8, 8.5 times the speed in SunSpider and 3.6 times the performance in Celtic Kane. IE9 PP2 is also clearly faster in JavaScript than the first platform preview.

Peacekeeper

Peacekeeper is a much more general benchmark that tests a much wider array of the performance features of a browser. There is even HTML5 graphics rendering included that, however, is not included in the final score of the benchmark. Which is rather unfortunate for Microsoft’s IE9.

Firefox 3.7a5 failed to load one of the six tests; every other browser ran through this test without problems.

Chrome 5 sets the standard, followed by Chrome 4 and Opera 10, with considerable distance. IE9 can’t compete in this test with its rivals, even if the PP2 is about twice as fast as IE8. Compared to IE8, Chrome 5 is about 8 times faster.
