iPad Growth Slowing?

Perhaps the iPad isn’t selling so well after all? Or people just aren’t browsing the web as much as Apple thought they would. Quantcast today released an interesting blurb in which the company claims that web usage originating from iPads has leveled off. A reason for concern?

The iPad is a device which, conceivably, and per Apple’s definition is the best device to browse the web and do everything Internet with it. So it is rather conclusive to assume that the actual presence of iPads on the web would correspond to the number of iPads in use or at least how frequently people are using their iPads.

According to Quantcast, the web usage of iPads is rather sobering. While the iPad accounted for 5% of mobile web consumption in North America on its first full day, the iPad has been relatively stable at 0.09% on weekends and 0.06% on weekdays. Growth has been relatively flat over the past four weeks. “Growth has slowed significantly,” Quantcast wrote.

There is not much more information behind the data set, but Quantcast noted that “this analysis does not include the use of applications that may be used to access web content, but as a proxy for usage, the number of web pages consumed on iPads as a percentage of all pageviews consumed is revealing.” The actual slowdown of web usage growth “may be due to fewer new devices being sold, or a reduction in the amount of web browsing conducted per device, or some combination of the two,” Quantcast said.
