Update: Acer Announces Chrome OS Display/PC

Acer is – at least as far as we know – the first company to announce a commercial Chrome OS product. It’s a 24″ display that can be used as a web browsing device without the need for a separate computer.

The DX241H isn’t much more than a display at first sight. However, the device integrates a simple SoC PC system (based on ARM Cortex-A8, according to heise.de) that enables PC-like functionality without the need of an actual PC. The display uses Chrome OS as the operating system and is primarily marketed as an Internet Appliance that enables web browsing and sharing of multimedia files.

The device connects via Wi-Fi and Acer’s clear.fi technology. Not surprisingly, the main pitch of the display is quick access to social networking websites such as Facebook. Among the key features are HDMI connectivity, USB and Ethernet ports, a VGA interface as well as speakers. The display’s maximum resolution is 1920×1080 (p).

So far, it appears that the DX241H has only been announced in Germany, where it will sell for 299 Euros (about $408).

Update: Heise.de updated its story stating that the display will not run Chrome OS. We got excited way too early. We were not able to reach a representative for Acer to comment on the story.
