Microsoft Shipped 2 Million Windows Phone 7 ‘Units’

After months of silence, Microsoft has revealed that it shipped 2 million units of the Windows Phone 7 operating system in the most recent quarter.

The information comes courtesy of Greg Sullivan, a senior product manager at Microsoft, who was interviewed by Bloomberg. Sullivan also noted that customer satisfaction of the platform stands at 93% and brand awareness is now at 66%. Of course, the shipment numbers are somewhat blurry as they indicate shipments to device manufacturers and not exactly device sales. Also, Android is now on more than 300,000 phones that are activated per day – translating to 27 million phones per quarter – and Apple sold 16.2 million iPhones in its most recent quarter.

Ultimately, Microsoft would have to compare itself to Android due to its platform approach and it has quite a bit of work to do until it catches up. However, Android needed time as well to reach its customers.

“Sales are an important measure, but for a new platform we think customer satisfaction and active developer support are more important indicators of how sales will be over the long term,” Sullivan told Bloomberg. Microsoft currently has about 24,000 registered developers for Windows Phone 7 and 6500 apps available in its app store. Apple’s App Store currently lists 332,230 available apps (398,089 since the beginning) and 68,628 active publishers. On average, Apple approves 627 new apps every day.
