3. Palm Foleo (2007)
The Palm Foleo could have been one of the biggest blunders in Silicon Valley. Luckily, Palm pulled the plug virtually days before the first devices would have shipped. The Foleo was a device no one could really explain. It was Palm’s silly idea to sell you a second $500 device next to your smartphone.
It somewhat looked like a small laptop computer, but it didn’t act like one. Its functionality and what you would do with it was much closer to that of a smartphone, but you couldn’t use it to make calls. As an extension for your Palm/Treo smartphone, you would have used the keyboard and the 10” screen to conveniently view presentations or author documents – or browse the web (if there was a WiFi hotspot close by, because you could not have used the smart phone as a modem and it did not have a cellular chip built in.) The result? Palm figured out that no one would be willing to carry a $500 Foleo next to a smartphone and an iPod in a briefcase.
