(In words: More than 227 million addresses.) If you wonder how the Internet is doing in terms of size, it’s always a good idea to jump over to Netcraft, which publishes a monthly web survey. It appears that the Internet is well on its way to approach the record number of 239,611,111 addresses that were posted for July 2009, but were corrected to an expiration of more than 30 million websites in the following months.

The Internet is a big place and it is likely that you would get lost or not find anything without the help of one of our search engines. Netcraft publishes a nifty little (well, not so little) analysis of the size of the web every month and it appears that we are now at 227,225,642 addresses as of the end of August 2010.

Netcraft has been keeping track of the number of URLs since March of 2003, when it found about 39 million sites. Back then, 62% of all web servers were run on Apache, 27% on Microsoft IIS, 2% on Zeus and 1% on Sun. Today, Apache has about 57%, Microsoft is still at 24%, Google is at almost 7%, Nginx at 5% and Lighttpd at just under 1%. While Google has quickly captured market share in recent years, thanks to its blogging network, it is Apache that has begun gaining share again, according to Netcraft. Apache apparently gained “1.5M hostnames for Servage, an almost 700% increase over last month, and gains of around 500k hostnames at ThePlanet.com, SAVVIS and GoDaddy,” Netcraft said.

The most reliable hosting company remains Rackspace, followed by New York Internet, Virtual Internet, One and Qubenet.
