A new study shows that cellphone penetration has reached 82% among the U.S. adult population, with higher education groups reaching up to 90%.

According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project, younger people are still more likely to own a cellphone than older people, more men carry cellphones than women, higher and higher education income is an indicator for higher cellphone penetration. If you are male, between the age of 18 and 29, black or Hispanic, have an income of $75,000 or more and if you have at least college education, then you fall into the bracket of the highest cellphone use.

65% of American adults use texting and typically send 10 texts every day. 5% send more than 200 texts a day. In the range of age 18-24, 18% of adults send at least 200 texts a day. Pew found that the average adult makes about five phone calls a day and women tend to make “slightly” fewer calls than men.

As a personal communication device, 91% of cellphone owners said that the device makes them feel safer and 88% use the cellphone as a way to organize their life. Nevertheless, 42% said that they feel irritated when a call or incoming text interrupts their current activity.
