I believe Microsoft's shutdown request is mainly to be used for those persons not using a legal Microsoft operating system. Lets say you have an illegal copy of Windows 7 on your computer. Microsoft want the power and right to shut your computer down. Microsoft is a powerful and greedy business that rakes in billions of dollars every year, and remains in business not because of having a superior operating system, but with the power of the dollars to pay off the greed filled Washington DC politicians. I have been using Xandros Desktop Home Edition Premium for the past five years, and while its not perfect, it is far better than MS WIndows. If you want MS to powder you behind, then stay with them, while they screw you with mal functioning operating systems. Have a nice day.

This is typical Microsoft BS. Microsoft's OSs hardly qualify as "modern" in the first place… Microsoft has been playing catchup since Bill Gates took over the licensing to DOS 40 years ago. "Obvious to anyone skilled in the art…" 'skilled in the art' and Microsoft is an interesting contradiction by itself.

This is a software architectural diagram of the steps it takes to shut down all the mess and complexity involved in closing a "user-friendly" operating system and all its appendages and peripherals. There are a lot of small things going on behind that pretty face. Remember, Windows and its ties to specified architecture Intel processors and AMD processors means there are all sorts of individual nuts, bolts, fasteners and connectors going on here. Each has to be handled individually and in order. Vista and "7" versions have more going on (although within the architecture) than anything before them. All of their external connections must be severed before the security services close, and the peripheral device accesses have to close before the internal operations handling software shuts down.
