Chrome 7 is slowly taking shape. Following news that GPU acceleration can already be activated in Chrome 7, the latest build now shows a careful integration of the upcoming Chrome Web Store.
Google isn’t wasting any time. Scheduled for launch in October, and following an initial announcement back in May as well as a preliminary opening for developers two weeks ago, Chrome 7.0.510.0 (Build 57881) is now integrating the Chrome Web Store on its default home page.
Previous versions displayed thumbnails of the most recently visited web pages. The latest browser build highlights installed “Apps” in a collapsible menu, which also includes a link to the web store (and currently to the Chrome Extensions Page). The slightly revised default home page also lists the recently visited pages as well as recently closed tabs.
It’s not a huge change so far, but the basic Chrome homepage now looks much more like a Start page that gives apps and extensions the same room as the browsing history.
We did not notice any performance improvements in this build, and saw a stable feature set as far as HTML 5 support is concerned.
