Google has become a major proponent of advancing HTML 5 and a new type of rich Internet applications that would be much more interactive than today’s average web site. The company has added a new demonstration that showcases an interactive film that runs in browser windows.
“The Wilderness Downtown” is a collaboration between writer Chris Milk, the band Arcade Fire and Google and attempts to give a hint what a personalized, interactive movie could look like.
The content is based on location requests and data that is pulled from Google Earth as well as Street View. The idea is to take you back to the area where you once lived and enables you to “write” a post card.
The project is based on multiple browser windows that open, change location and disappear again. It may not be the most elegant HTML5 presentation we have seen so far, but it gives us a good idea what may be coming up in the not too distant future.
At least as far as the dynamics are concerned, the HTML5 idea shows the flexibility to take on Flash – even if this specific example may not be everyone’s taste.
