Steve Jobs’ Dream or Nightmare: The iBrabus for $447,000

Kurt Bakke in Business Products on August 28

There have been a few occasions I can remember on which a luxury was as decadent as this one: German tuner Brabus converted a Mercedes S-Class into an Apple car that is equipped with a Mac Mini, iPads, Mac display and iPod. It may be closer to Apple overkill than Apple simplicity and you may either love or hate it.

Well, someone must love Appel at Brabus, or at least the company thinks that people love Apple enough so that they are willing to shell out $61,000 for a luxury car that integrates Apple technology. The base package, available for $11,300, includes a table in the back as well as an iPad that is attached some, non-critical, system features of the car. The passenger can use the iPad to tap into the Command system of the car, which includes navigation and entertainment features. For example, the iPad can be used to change the lighting in the car, change a TV station, use the phone or enter a destination in the navigation system. We are not quite sure, why you would want to do that from the back of the car.

For $61,000, or a total price of $447,000 for the iBrabus, you get a Mac mini that is built into a drawer in the trunk, a 15.2” display in the ceiling, two iPads with keyboards as well as a 64 GB iPod touch with charging station. All devices can be used to do what you can do with the regular Apple device, but they are tied into the electronics system as well. Brabus calls the car the “iBrabus” and the first true “iBusiness” car for people who live in an “iWorld”.

I could imagine that Steve Jobs may be smiling at the fact that his magical products are now integrated into a magical car.

However, the iBrabus is not exactly a reflection of the minimalistic Apple design. It’s a ridiculous car for those who may have no idea what else to do with half a million dollars. Click through our image gallery to have a closer look. Oh, I almost forgot: The base for the iBrabus is a regular Brabus SV12 R with a 750 hp engine that will accelerate the car to 211 mph. Without the Apple gimmicks, you can get that car for the bargain price of $386,000.
