Google has begun allowing its Gmail users to make fee softphone calls to landlines on Wednesday and it appears that quite a bit of people have tried it. The company announced via its Twitter feed that more than 1 million calls were placed within 24 hours.

According to Google, Gmail Voice will remain free at least until the end of the year for national calls, while international calls are available from 2 cents per minute. The service goes head to head against Skype, which offers a similar service, but charges $7.99 per month.

If you have not seen the feature in your Gmail account yet, you should see it shortly as Google said that it would be rolling out the phone function to all of its users over a period of a few days.
