Steam: Macbook Pro Most Popular Apple Gaming Platform

Mac Gamers are a somewhat mysterious group – we do not really know much about them and if we are honest, PC gamers have never taken them serious anyway. That has changed somewhat as Steam has released a first round of statistics of Apple gamers, which reveals that the MacbookPro is by far the preferred game device on the traditional desktop level of games. And who would have thought that people would use their Mac minis as a gaming device as well?

Valve had made Steam Mac gaming statistics available for the first time. According to the results, the typical Mac gamer has a MacbookPro notebook with a 2.3 – 2.69 GHz dual-core processor, a GeForce 9400M graphics card, 4 GB of main memory a screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels, a hard drive that has a size between 100 and 249 GB and runs MacOS X 10.6.3.

That compares to the average PC gamer who has a Windows XP-PC with a 2.3 – 2.69 GHz processor, an ATI HD 4800/5700/5800 graphics card, 3 GB of main memory, 1280×1024 pixel screen resolution, as well as a hard drive with a size between 250 and 499 GB.

49.40% of all Steam Mac gamers use a Macbook Pro, followed by the iMac (24.49%), Macbook (17.10%), MacPro (5.16%), and Mac mini (3.10%). Only 8.31% of Macs have at least 5 GB of memory or more installed, while only 0.30% of Macs run at CPU speeds of 3.3 to 3.69 GHz and 0.20% are faster than 3.7 GHz. 7.15% of Macs on Steam have four cores and 2.27% 8 cores.
