Seven out of ten U.S. consumers believe that 3D TVs could potentially cause damage to their eyes. The biggest obstacle in selling 3D TVs may not be available content and pricey glasses after all.

According to Strategy Analytics, 55% of the 2000 U.S. consumers in its survey said that they were not sure about a potential health risk to their eyes, while 17% said they were certain that 3D TVs would damage their vision.

“We’ve long believed that 3D TV faced a tough road with numerous obstacles, namely content availability, consumer interest and viable business models” said Ben Piper, director of Strategy Analytics’ Multiplay Market Dynamics service. “However, these issues all take a back seat in light of the latest findings.”

The market research firm believes that vendors need to address those concerns immediately, if they want to start selling more 3D TVs. Strategy Analytics noted that there is little published scientific evidence linking 3D TV and eye problems, but “anecdotal reports of eye strain, dizziness, headaches and nausea are common.”

“Whether or not the safety concerns are justified is immaterial,” said David Mercer, vice president of the Strategy Analytics Digital Consumer Practice. “The perception issue is one that could substantially hamper 3D TV’s growth going forward.”
