The market research firm said that 35% of those gamers are entirely new to video games and have never played any other type of video game before. Especially women seem, to be attracted by social gaming. However, NPD said that 47% of social network gamers are male and 53% are female. The total U.S. social gaming audience is estimated at 56.8 million people.

Also interesting is the fact that social network gaming is changing the way we pay for games. While the actual game is often free, we spend money on in-game items. NPD said that 10% of social network gamers have spent money playing these games and 11% said they may make future purchase. They also noted that since they have started playing social network games, they are spending less on traditional games.
