Browser Update: Firefox 4 Hits Performance Milestone

As Mozilla is preparing the rollout of the fourth Beta of Firefox 4 on August 23, a pre-release of Beta 5 has been made available and Mozilla claims that its new JaegerMonkey JavaScript engine completes the SunSpider test now in less that 500 ms, which was set as the initial when the development began earlier this year.

Sunspider Test Benchmark Update: JM=JaegerMonkey; TM=TraceMonkey

According to Mozilla’s Dave Mandelin, JaegerMonkey is now at 497 ms in Sunspider. Apparently, the new engine could be close to being released in the trunk builds of Firefox as the software has passed Mozilla’s tinderbox tests and there are just two bugs left.

On the downside, it appears that JM will be missing a release in Firefox Beta 5 as the pre-release was published earlier today. Beta 5 shows continued speed improvements in its TraceMonkey JavaScript engine and appears to be the first release that comes with a flawless user interface for Windows Vista. The Tab Candy feature appears to have further improved and shows a much smoother and natural integration into the browser.

There has also been some news over at Opera: The new 10.70 snapshot introduces a sync feature of its content blocker. Blocked items are synchronized via the cloud and are applied to any of your Opera browsers.
