Microsoft today confirmed that IE9 Beta will be launched on September 15. Developers, designers, bloggers and press are receiving invitations to a special launch event titles “Beauty of the Web” in San Francisco.
So far, IE9 has been downloaded more than 2.5 million times in its platform previews, Microsoft said. As far as we can tell from the four platform previews, IE9 will be substantially faster and nimble than IE8, but remain behind Chrome, Safari and Opera in terms of JavaScript performance. Mozilla is still working to catch up with Microsoft and appears to be making good progress.
According to released benchmark data, Mozilla’s new JavaScript engine is just about 10% slower than the latest Platform Preview of IE9. However, Microsoft highlights the HTML5 hardware acceleration capabilities in IE9, which give the browser and edge over Chrome, Safari and Opera. Mozilla is still completing its hardware acceleration engine, but available builds suggest that Firefox will be very competitive with IE9 in this category.
The first platform preview of IE9 was released on March 17 of this year.
