It appears that Amazon may have hit a home run with its latest generation Kindle as both the 3G and Wi-Fi versions are “temporarily sold out”.

A notice on Amazon’s website states that the Kindle 3G and Kindle Wi-Fi, which are offered for $189 and $139, respectively” will not ship until early September or two weeks after the launch of the device:

“Temporarily Sold Out. Order now to reserve your place in line Due to strong customer demand, Kindle is temporarily sold out. Order now to reserve your place in line. Orders are prioritized on a first come, first served basis. Orders placed today are expected to ship on or before September 4th.”

Affected are only the 6” devices, which were announced last week. The new 9.7” Kindle DX is still available, but costs more than twice than the basic readers ($379).

The new Kindles have started a broad discussion whether Amazon can be positioning the Kindles as tablets against the significantly more expensive Apple iPad, which can also be used as an e-reader.
