Porsche confirmed that it will build the 918 plug-in hybrid supercar, which was shown as a prototype at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and at Auto China in Bejing. Porsche said that it would consider building the car if about 1000 customers showed interest. Apparently, more than 5000 potential buyers have shown up.
Porsche may be beat Mercedes and its SLS electric supercar as well as the Audi R8-like Etron supercar to market. But even if is not entirely electric, it may be the very first dream car of the hybrid age, carrying a price tag that is far out of reach of the average car buyer. The company today said it will in fact build the 918 Spyder, but declined to comment a specific details besides the anticipated gas-mileage of about 78.4 MPG (U.S.).
The prototype derives its power from a 500 hp V8 as well as two electric motors that add a combined 218 hp. The car accelerates in about 3.0 seconds from 0-60 mph and tops out at about 198 mph, Porsche previously said. Also, the car is expected to lap Germany’s Nürburgring in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds.

The drivetrain supports four modes. “Eco” is based on electricity, and the lithium-ion battery is good for 16 miles. “Hybrid” uses both gasoline and electric power in varying combinations. “Sport” sends most of the power going to the rear wheels. “Race” is targeted at uncompromised for all-out performance, with the electric motors provide a kinetic energy recovery system.
There is no information when the car will make it into production, but Porsche let slip out at the Geneva Auto Show that the 918 will cost, if built, more than 500,000 Euros, which equates to more than $630,000. However, if you are among the people interested in buying the 918, you are unlikely to care whether it is $500,000 or $700,000 anyway. In any case, we do assume that you will be able to buy Priuses for the entire family before you could even think about a 918.
