By this time, its necessary to see any bit of good news that come sout of the BP oil spill and as far as Sunday is concerned, BP said that it captured or burned 23,290 barrels of crude oil that had leaked from its ruptured deep-sea offshore well into the Gulf of Mexico.
According to BP, its containment cap system collected 14,570 barrels of crude on Sunday, while 8,720 barrels were burned. BP is nearing the maximum efficiency level of the system, which have a total estimated capacity of 28,000 barrels per day. The collected on Sunday translates into about 978,180 gallons or 3.7 million liters. BP said that it has now prevented more than 231,000 barrels from spilling into the ocean.
Of course, the collected oil is only a fraction from what is spewing into the ocean every day. Most recent estimates state that between 50,000 and 60,000 barrels of crude spill into the Gulf of Mexico every day. BP itself now believes that the cost of the disaster will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 billion, while some analysts already said that $100 billion may be more realistic.
