Playstation 3 Goes 3D: Just Add A $2100 TV

You knew there were some bragging rights left in your PS3, didn’t you? Sony today announced that it will be offering four stereoscopic 3D games for download tomorrow. You may not be able to play them right away since you need a 3D TV. What a coincidence that Sony is now offering 3D Bravia TVs for pre-sale as well. And they are not especially cheap.

Sony Move for PS3

Just yesterday I thought about upgrading our somewhat dated and wimpy 32” family room LCD TV with a new LED screen that should have a size of 40” or more. Costco wanted $1400 for such a TV and I felt it was a bit expensive, since I remembered what I wrote about LCD TV prices not too long ago. Now that TV sounds like a good deal – or a bad one, if you intend to stay up to date with tech.

The PS3 will be running 3D games, thanks to a recent firmware update, beginning tomorrow. Sony said it will post 3D versions of Wipeout HD, MotorStorm Pacific Rift, Super Stardust HD and Pain. The games are offered for download free of charge, if you purchase a Sony 3D TV. There was no price mentioned for non Sony TVs, but we heard that Sony will price the bundle at $29.99.

Sony pitches the download just in time to promote its new Bravia 3D TVs. If you are planning to play 3D games on a 3D TV, plan on spending at least $2100 for a 40” TV, $2700 for a 46” version, $3400 for a 55” TV, $4000 for 52” versions. You can, of course, go totally nuts with a $5000 60” model.

Sony also said that The Fight: Lights Out will be available in stereoscopic 3D, combining PlayStation Move with 3D to deliver an immersive and realistic gaming experience. 3D Blu-ray movie playback is coming to the PS3 this year via firmware update, Sony noted.
